The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are among the most prestigious and respected engineering and technology institutions in India. They are known worldwide for their high-quality education, advanced research, and strong contribution to science and innovation. The first IIT was established in Kharagpur in 1951, and today there are more than 23 IITs across the country, including those in Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and many more.
The IITs were created by the Government of India to promote technical education and research at the highest level. They function as autonomous public institutions but are linked through a common council called the IIT Council, which oversees their policies and standards. IITs offer a wide range of programs in engineering, technology, science, and management. The main degrees include:
B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) – Undergraduate program (4 years)
M.Tech (Master of Technology) – Postgraduate program (2 years)

The academic curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in theory along with practical exposure. Students work on projects, internships, and research to gain hands-on experience in solving real-world problems.
Admission to IITs is one of the most competitive in the world. Students have to clear the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted in two stages – JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Only the top-ranking students from JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Those who qualify in JEE Advanced can get admission to different IITs based on their rank and preference.
